Best Beaches on Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande, located just a few miles off the coast west of Rio de Janeiro, is one of the pearls of Brazil’s endangered Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest), which used to cover nearly all of the country’s Atlantic coast. Around 85% of the tropical forest’s area has been eliminated by urbanization and deforestation, but the parts that remain are considered one of the world’s most important hotspots of biodiversity.

Ilha Grande remains a virtually unspoiled example of the lush Atlantic Forest, virtually undisturbed by human development. This was only possible because of the island’s unique history, remaining closed to the public for nearly all of the 20th century as it held an immigration quarantine facility and later a maximum-security prison that housed some of Brazil’s most infamous criminals. The island opened for tourism with the closure of the prison in 1994, but it still remains a nearly untouched paradise, with 87% of the island's land under protected status. Even the tourist infrastructure is hardly a stain on the island’s natural beauty: there is only one main town, and there are no cars or paved roads anywhere. Beyond the amazing flora and fauna, the island is also home to some of Brazil’s best beaches. Read on for a guide to some of the best beaches on Ilha Grande.

Praia Lopes Mendes
Frequently cited as one of Brazil’s most beautiful beaches, Lopes Mendes boasts a seemingly endless stretch of fine white sand and turquoise waters. To reach it, visitors must take a boat to Praia do Pouso and walk 20 minutes through the forest, or embark on a scenic two-hour hike from Vila do Abraão, the island’s main town.
I highly recommend opting for the hike to get there; the feeling of jumping into the water after sweating your way there is complete bliss.

The next four beaches are all included on the Volta à Ilha boat tour that takes you around the entire island. There are numerous tour agencies in town, but I recommend using Agência Ilha Grande Oficial.
Praia do Caxadaço
A hidden gem accessible only by boat or a challenging jungle hike, this tiny cove is framed by dramatic rock formations and crystal-clear waters.

Its remote location makes it a perfect spot for those seeking tranquility and seclusion.

Praia de Parnaioca
One of the island’s most isolated beaches, Parnaioca is where the rainforest meets the sea, with a freshwater river flowing into its golden sands.

Be sure to check out the Igreja Sagrado Coração de Jesus, and keep an eye out for monkeys along the way.

Praia do Aventureiro
Famous for its L-shaped palm tree, this beach is one of the island’s best.

The clear, calm waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, while the surrounding cliffs and trails offer stunning panoramic views.

Praia dos Meros
A paradise for divers and snorkelers, Praia dos Meros boasts vibrant marine life and crystal-clear waters. Its pristine beauty and inaccessibility by land make it one of Ilha Grande’s most exclusive and untouched beaches.
